Adopted Tennessee River Mile 602

I adopted Tennessee River Mile 602 (Fort Loudon Marina) through Keep the Tennessee River Beautiful (KTRB). KTRB is an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful and is the first affiliate to be solely dedicated to a river.

The Tennessee River runs through my town and volunteering to keep it cleaner is a hands-on activity I look forward to doing.

I’ve worked for the betterment of the natural world in various ways over the years. I was inspired to take on this local project after taking my kids to the Fort Loudon Recreational area and seeing trash on the shoreline.

October is “Keep the Tennessee River Watershed Beautiful Month.” Keep the Tennessee River Beautiful (KTRB) had a simple guide showing how to request a proclamation from your local government leadership to honor the river. The Tennessee River watershed has been identified as the most biodiverse river in North America including 230 species of fish, which is twice that of the Mississippi River. Further, the   Tennessee Valley has over 41,000 miles of rivers, lakes, and streams. I live in Lenoir City and requested a proclamation from Mayor Tony Aikens. His assistant was extremely helpful and worked with me to finish the proclamation. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee also proclaimed October “Keep the Tennessee River Watershed Beautiful Month.” I’m glad my local and state leadership support the Tennessee River.

First Cleanup!

This month, I did the first clean up at mile 602 with my kiddos. The cleanup was short and it was raining outside, but it was a good time. Keep the Tennessee River Beautiful sent us T-shirts, gloves, and trash bags. We found cans, plastic bottles, straws, paper, glass bottles, and other materials littered in the area. We focused on a specific section of the shoreline near a walkway. Altogether, we gathered about 1/4 bag of trash. My daughter had a lot of questions, so it was a good learning opportunity. She asked why people left trash at the park and I had to think of how to respond in a way that made sense to her. My son wanted to jump in the water to get trash he saw floating! He’s a big water fan and he tries to be helpful. I had some great helpers and look forward to future cleanups!
